Annam's Idli Cloth is a soft cotton cloth for lining idli plates with holes. The cloth lets steam pass through evenly, keeps the batter from sticking and makes it easy to take out soft, whole idlis. It comes in packs of 2 or 4, in two sizes to fit our idli plates.
Best for: soft idlis in idli pots with holed plates, and steaming kozhukattai and other dishes.
Sizes
- Large (14 inch): for 5 idli and 7 idli plates (10, 12 and 14 Idli Pots, 7 Idli Pot and Kadai Type 7 Idli Pot)
- Small (11 inch): for 4 idli plates only (4 Idli Pot)
The cloths are cut slightly larger than the plate because cotton shrinks a little after the first few washes.
Why choose Annam's
- Soft cotton that lets steam pass through evenly
- Idlis come out whole, without sticking to the plate
- Reusable; wash and dry after each use
- Sized to fit our Chettinad idli plates
How to use
Wet the cloth and squeeze out the extra water. Spread it over the idli plate, pour the batter into each mould and steam as usual. After steaming, lift the cloth with the idlis and turn them out gently.
Care
Rinse off any batter, wash in plain water or mild soap and dry fully in the sun before storing.
Frequently asked questions
Which size should I choose?
Choose Large (14 inch) for 5 and 7 idli plates. Choose Small (11 inch) only for 4 idli plates.
Why is the cloth bigger than the plate?
Cotton shrinks a little after use and washing, so each cloth is cut slightly larger to keep fitting well.
Can I use the cloth on plates without holes?
It is meant for plates with holes. On plates without holes, steam reaches the batter only from the sides and not from underneath, so the idlis take longer to cook. Plates without holes are usually just greased.
Is it reusable?
Yes. Wash and dry it fully after each use.
